Went to check out the World Press Photo 2010 exhibition happening at Brisbane Powerhouse in New Farm with bestie about 2-3 weeks back.

My first time in New Farm area but with the help of the Maps app on my iPhone, it's virtually impossible to get lost! =P
The World Press Photo is a critically acclaimed photojournalism exhibition that recognises the world's best press photographers and it showcases the world's best press photos of 2009. It is THE leading international competition in press photography, and a total of 101, 960 entries from 5, 847 professional photographers from 128 countries were received.

There were many categories, such as Nature, Sports Feature, Sports Action, Contemporary Issues, Portraits, General News, etc.

Due to the graphic nature of the images, it's recommended for people aged above 15 years. But all of the potentially disturbing pictures are shown inside a room.
Here are some of the photographs/ stories that caught my attention:

This soldier lost part of his brains during the war. :(

Have you wondered where do the neatly packaged slabs of meat found in supermarkets come from?

This is a series of images of a man being stoned to death for commiting adultery. Sometimes I wonder how can a photographer allow this sort of inhumanity to take place in front of him. This reminds me of the image below that was circulated in emails many many years back:

This picture won the Pulitzer Prize in 1994 if I'm not wrong.
It was taken during the famine in Sudan and the little girl was crawling her way to the feeding centre and the vulture is waiting nearby for her to die. The photographer received the highest accolades but burdened with guilt and sadness, he took his life.
Of course there are many more images showcased in the exhibition, if you're interested you can click here to see the rest of it.
